Iloilo
A Hidden Gem in the Heart of the Philippines
Looking for a hidden gem destination of the Philippines? Where to go for an off-the-beaten track? The answer to these questions may be Iloilo!
Iloilo is a tranquil province located right in the centre of the Philippines. Due to its geographical location, it is often addressed as “The heart of the Philippines”. And probably, the visitors that explored these places left their own hearts there too.

Iloilo is part of the very big island of Panay, the 6th largest island in the Philippines and the 4th most populated one, which is shared with the adjoining provinces of Capiz, Aklan and Antique.
The biggest urban centre of the province is Iloilo City, the capital of the homonymous province. The city is often pointed out as one of the cities with the best life quality in the Philippines with a pleasant climate, green spaces, few high-rise buildings, bike lanes, vibrant cultural and creative movements, yet also modern developed services of international quality.

An Acient Heritage and a Thriving Culinary Scene
The first Spanish colonizers settled in the city already back in 1566. For this reason, you can find numerous buildings and churches of such historical period, as well as mansions and villas like Molo Mansion and Camiña Balay Nga Bato. The city also became a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy thanks to iconic recipes like La Paz Batchoy and Pancit Molo as well as the widespread presence of sweet baked products. Indeed, Iloilo is a historically flourished seaport thanks to the commerce of sugar canes. Sugar cane plantations were extensively established in the near Bacolod Province and boomed subsequently thanks to exports, making a fortune for the wealthy classes.

Moving out of Iloilo City you can find smaller towns with signs of the past hidden here and there. Most probably, the most interesting point is the ancient Miag-ao Church (Church of San Tomas de Villanueva), located in the south-western portion of the province. This church is 1 of the 4 UNESCO Heritage Baroque Churches of the Philippines thanks to their original mix of styles and cultural backgrounds. It deserves to be visited to admire the charming façade ornated with tropical decorations.

Right in front of Iloilo City you find Guimaras Island, home of small resorts and overall famous for the wide presence of the unanimously considered by Filipinos as the best mangoes of the country. We are talking about the legendary Guimaras mangoes, source of pride for the local Ilonggo people! They are sweet, have little fiber and have a huge size: they are considered the most valuable mangoes of the Philippines and of the whole Asia.

The Best Sea at Gigantes Islands and Surroundings
Moving north, towards the border with the neighbouring Capiz Province, you can probably find the most beautiful sea of Iloilo at Gigantes Islands (Islas de Gigantes). The two biggest islands are called Gigantes Nortes and Gigantes Sur, both more than 200-meter tall. The most famous one is Cabugao Gamay (known also as Antonia): it became the symbol of Gigantes thanks to its gorgeous conformation made of a small hill from where a bar of sand expands, pointed with coconut trees: an artistic creation of nature that looks like it just came out of a painting!

Aside from the typically crystal-clear sea of the Philippines, this small archipelago of 10 islands offers the chance to discover natural landscape of exception value, with sand-bars, lagoons and paradisiac beaches. The sea is decorated by rock formations covered by lush vegetation, where the nature is still at its pristine state. This area is just marginally touched by mass tourism: at Gigantes Islands you can experience the genuine provincial life while enjoying wonderful sea beds and spectacular islets.

Staying at Sicogon Island or in Carles on the mainland of Panay, it’s possible to go island hopping and to discover unique landscapes in an exciting natural environment. And as if it wasn’t enough, these areas of Iloilo are famous for the great abundance of fish and seafood at a very fair price. Those who visit these places won’t just delight their eyes but also their palates with the famous local scallops and oysters.
